ASSESSMENT AND UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING
Universal Design for Learning emphasizes the idea of Equity > Equality and how understanding the uniqueness of our students will help teachers develop assessment strategies that mirror this idea. Remember: Necessary for One -Good for All !
THE WHO, WHAT, WHEN, and HOW of UDL Assessment adapted from: http://www.cast.org/teachingeverystudent/ideas/tes/chapter7_1.cfm
WHO When creating assessment strategies it is important to acknowledges the individual learning differences amongst the students.
-Individual differences in content recognition: -Individual differences in strategic expression -Individual differences in engagement
Learning is the responsibility of both the student and the teacher, however the teacher must lay the foundation and create an atmosphere in which every student can learn.
WHAT A UDL approach to assessment will yield more accurate results as students are judged based on their own abilities rather than a standardized approach to assessment.
The learning goal when the information was delivered should be the same as the learning/assessment goal when evaluating.
WHEN Assessment must be ongoing, varied in nature, and administered over a period of time to provide multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate the full range of their learning.
HOW -integrate assessment into instruction
-allow for the use of classroom supports including but not limited to, text-to-speech & speech-to-text technology, computers/tablets, educational assistants, visual aids, auditory technologies, motor-skill assistive technology, etc.
-create a classroom environment that fosters equity and including where student success and mistakes are celebrated
-use a variety of assessment techniques such as: peer and self-assessment, student/teacher conferences, portfolios (that also for a collection of all levels of student works), diagnostic assessments, authentic assessment, etc.
